What is Aquafire®?
Aquafire® is a type of electric fireplace insert powered by water that uses ultrasonic technology to create a fine mist that mimics the appearance of flames and smoke. These fireplaces do not produce actual flames, but instead, they create a realistic-looking flame effect using LED lights and water vapor.
Water vapor fireplace inserts are generally easy to install and use, as they do not require any venting or chimneys, and they can be operated using a remote control. They are also considered to be a safer and more environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional fireplaces since they do not emit any harmful pollutants or particles into the air.
Are the flames real?
Nope! Aquafire® simply runs on tap water! The water vapor flame is created by ultrasonic technology that vibrates a small metal plate at high frequencies to create a fine mist. This mist is then illuminated by LED lights that change color and intensity to create the appearance of flames.
Are they hard to install?
Not at all, you just need two people and some rope. Our inserts were designed so that the average homeowner is able to install them by following our installation guides. We have both written and visual instructions that people find easier to follow than Ikea directions!

Does Aquafire® produce heat?
No. Aquafire® Water Vapor Fireplace Inserts produces the look of fire without the danger of heat or flame. This is ideal for warmer climates and commercial spaces and allows for less restrictions for enclosure materials.

Product FAQs
Is the insert double sided?
Yes, the Aquafire water vapor fireplace insert is designed so you can view the flames from the front and back of the fireplace. It’s a 3D flame effect.
What kind of water can I use?
We strongly encourage only using tap water for Aquafire®. The flame effect is actually enhanced by the minerals and slight impurities in the tap water. Certain water treatments such as filtered, distilled and reverse osmosis water can actually minimize the natural effect of the vapor flame.
Note: Do not use hard water without a softener. See our hard water guide here.
Do you sell surrounds or other accessories?
At the moment we are hyper-focused on creating the world's most advanced and useful water vapor fireplaces so we only sell the fireplace insert. We do not currently sell any fireplace enclosures, surrounds or accessories.
I need more than a 60" insert. How does that work?
Our inserts can be ganged together to accomodate the desire for larger fireplace features! Multiple inserts can be installed into one cutout to create a continuous flame that can be easily controlled with one remote. The inserts come in 3 sizes: 20”, 40” and 60”. You can purchase and install any combination of insert sizes to create your desired flame length. The recommended cutout dimensions can be found on the in our Installation Guide.
Note: Although they are installed together, their internal components do not connect so they will each need their own water line (if applicable) and outlet plug.
Can it go outside?
Water Vapor Fireplace Inserts are not typically installed outdoors or rated for outdoor use due to the effect uncontrolled environmental elements (wind, rain, light) can have on the resulting flame.
However, it can be installed with proper precautions and many of our customers are able to successfully do so with great results. It needs to be under a covered porch or roof as rain and debris can easily get inside the insert if left exposed. A wind screen is needed around the insert to protect the flames from heavy winds and cross-breezes. You would also need to drain the insert before potentially freezing weather.
Installation FAQs
Do you provide installation services?
We do not provide installation nor do we recommend local installers or contractors. The installation guide was created for the contractor, homeowner, plumber or whomever will be installing the insert. The
guide provides cutout dimensions and minimum installation requirements to give guidance for the enclosure design. Creating the perfect enclosure design will ensure optimal flame effect and guarantee longevity of the insert. We also have an architect on staff to review any designs so you can achieve the best possible results using the Aquafire® Water Vapor Fireplace Inserts.
Please email a Customer Experience Specialist at ces@aquafire.com for a copy of the installation guide and/or to submit design plans for review.
Do I need to install a drain?
A: No. Each Aquafire® water vapor fireplace insert has a backflow valve and pressure regulator which makes a drain line unnecessary.
It’s going to be at least a week until I can install my insert, what should I do with it?
A: For installations that will occur more than a week after delivery: Please test your insert as soon as it is delivered, then drain and securely store the insert in the original packaging until you are ready to install. Construction debris can easily get inside the insert and negatively affect the insert operation. The insert should be installed at the very end of the project, when you are ready to enjoy it!
What materials are needed to build an enclosure for Aquafire?
The possibilities are endless for your enclosure material(s) as you do not need to protect them from water or heat. With proper ventilation, you are also able to cover the top of the insert with media such as rocks, log sets and other fire accessories. The flame effect looks best against a matte, dark background.
